Access America Online via the Internet? That's right, and read
on for the details. Mark Anbinder reports on Apple's System
Update 3.0, which includes a slew of fixes for System 7.1 (and
later) users, Mr. Chan complains rightly about the way
international customers are treated, and John Wolf provides
some instructions for a rainy day of electronics work, assuming
you want to use Apple's resolution switching software with a

Norm,
Well, the first thing that comes to mind is that your System & Finder
are taking up *way* too much RAM!!!
To start with, unless you have an 020 or 030 accelerator card that can
give you a maximum of *more* than 4 Meg, your total memory should be
4096 K.
I run my SE with System 6.0.8, and I have an 030 card in it. The Finder
(6.1.8) takes up about 160 K, if I remember correctly. My System, without
any INITs, etc. uses about 200 K, and the way I have it, it takes slightly
less than 900 K.
Thunderworks doesn't take up all that much RAM, either (especially if you
compare it to something like Photoshop), so you shouldn't be running out of
RAM from that...
Best thing I can say at this point is to ask you to give me a *complete*
list of what you have as far as INIT's, cdev's, etc., on your Mac, and we
can take it from there... :)
Hope this helps! :)

We have a very old version (1.03) which was published in 1988 by a company
called BrainPower, Inc. We would like to purchase either the latest version
or a suitable equivalent.
DataScan is capable of reading TIFF or MacPaint bit-map files of graphs
and converting the data to x-y values. It can handle multiple lines and has
options for noise tolerance and other things.
If anyone knows the current status of this software or suitable equivalent
and where it can be obtained then please let me know.

it has problems both establishing a connection and maintaining it for any

I suspect the problem is the speed of the SE, since I have managed to make

Subject: A repair guide to Personal Laserwriter NT ?
I have an Apple Personal Laserwriter NT which I have gummed up with a
sticky label from laser label stationery. When the front of the
Laserwriter is open, the miscreant label is clearly visible underneath
the fuser (black "furry" plastic, marked 'Warning High Temperature'), but
is not accessible either from above or from below (i.e. from the manual
paper feed area). It seems that I shall have to unscrew something,
probably the fuser unit, to get to the label.
Although the Laserwriter is no longer under warranty, I am wary about
randomly unscrewing parts without knowing what I am doing, in case I
don't succeed in getting it all back together again. Can anyone advise
me on which screws I should undo to remove the fuser? Or is there
another, better access route?
Is there a repair manual for this Laserwriter that can be purchased for a
reasonable sum by people like me, i.e. ordinary owners, which shows which
screws do what and the like?
All help gratefully received. Thanks.

Subject: Corrupt Word docs 'Recovered'
Hi all,
This technique/long shot worked for me, maybe somebody else could find it
useful. Sorry if everybody knows about it already:
A customer here had been busily documenting a sophisticated project
recently with Microsoft Word 5.1, a file of about 410K in length. Machine
was a Quadra 950 with sys 701, 12MB RAM. After a successful morning's
modifying of this file, the person returned after lunch to continue, only
to find on doubleclicking the file that the machine froze.
Reaching no further than the Word toolbars, one of two problems would occur:
1) Total lockout with no response from CMD-OPT-ESC or programmer's key
2) Occasionally a "Not enough memory to open Word" and immediate Quit.
Opening Word first then the file from within would suspend the machine but
CMD-OPT-ESC could in this case quit, but it did look like the file was the
trouble and not Word itself.
Their last backup? A month ago.
When will it be needed? Next few days.
The customer was not happy ("Distraught").
Usual attempts to fix with Norton Utils, checks with Disinfectant etc.
didn't help.
File duplicated and copied OK.
Converting the creator code and type to permit opening in PlainText allowed
viewing of the ACSII but of course all the formatting was lost (lots of
it). Saving as text and opening in Word still caused the hang. But being
able to see the doc contents was a big help - there seemed to be some sort
of graphics commands there (EPS perhaps but I'm no expert; there had been a
graph image in there somewhere) with bits of document text interspersed at
various points, and what looked to be some Eudora email messages stuck in
their too! Apparently the person in question had had Eudora open
simultaneously with Word 5.1 that morning.... weird huh? Anyway I could cut
and paste the individual unformatted text sections into another doc and
save OK so I suspected manic graphics were causing the hang.
A sort of solution was available by virtue of the the multiplatform systems
we have here: mostly macs and Windows PCs. All I did was to format a floppy
with PC exchange as a PC disk, transfer the bad Mac Word file to it, open
it (slowly) in PC Word4Windows which seemed to handle the file, then save
as a proper Word4Windows file again. Then, take it back to the Mac, let
Word 5.1 convert from PC to Mac word format, and lo and behold it opened OK
with all the formatting intact. The good/bad bit (depending on your
perspective) is that the graphic was lost - though this was not a problem
because it was early on in the doc and could be recovered from the old
backup.
Presumably, the translation between Word for Mac and Word for Windows is
not 100%, and so anything not understood is filtered out in the translation
- including the screwball graphics.
Cheers,
Steve

Subject: Delete MerryXMAS
About This Document
------------------
This document contains information on
* the Delete MerryXmas stack
* the MerryXmas virus
* how to use Delete MerryXmas
* freeware legal information
* contacting the author
What is Delete MerryXmas?
------------------------
Delete MerryXmas 1.0 is a HyperCard stack that will check your
stacks for the MerryXmas HyperCard virus. It can also install
protection into your Home stack to detect and remove the
MerryXmas virus automatically. Most (if not all) virus
protection programs cannot detect this virus.
What is the MerryXmas Virus?
---------------------------
The MerryXmas virus infects stack scripts, starting with the
Home stack, and any other stacks that you open thereafter. The
virus infects HyperCard (and possibly SuperCard) stacks
*only*. It does not infect any other files on your hard disk.
How to Use Delete MerryXmas
--------------------------
Delete MerryXmas 1.0.2 requires HyperCard version 2.1 or later,
and at least as much free disk space as the size of the
largest stack to be checked.
1. Double-click the Delete MerryXmas stack to open it.
The stack immediately disinfects your Home stack, to
avoid errors from an existing MerryXmas virus infection.
2. Click the Add... button.
To add whole folders or hard disk volumes, hold down
the Option key as you click the Add... button.
Repeat step 2 to add stacks from more than one location.
3. Select the stacks you want to optimize.
4. Click Start.
A grey bar shows the stack's progress through the list
of stacks. When all stacks have been checked, a report
appears.
5. Click Save.
A dialog box appears for you to name the report. Click
the Save button (or press the Return key).
6. Click Done.
To stop the optimization at any time, click the Stop button.
After confirming your action, Delete MerryXmas will stop
checking stacks in the list, leaving the remaining stacks
untouched. (At certain times, the Stop button is dimmed and
the current process cannot be canceled.)
Scripter's Note
--------------
If you enjoy scripting in HyperCard as much as I do, you're
probably quite likely to end up wanting to take it apart.
A word of warning: Delete MerryXmas has been designed to work
best in its original, *locked* state, so please tinker with an
unlocked *copy* only. Also, unlocking Delete MerryXmas may
result in its being infected, so please keep it locked.

That's a private directory - there's never been anything in there
for people to play with (nor much of anything ever). There may be
at some point, but no guarantees.
> Does anyone know where this document is, or where I can get instruction
> on creating my own views?
That document has nothing on working with Easy View anyway. Easy View
comes with its own documentation and includes its author's email address
both in the About box and in the documentation.
> And, by the way, just to overload this note, EasyView 2.4 got a bus error
> on my 660av while I was bumbling around trying to make a new view. Are
> there known problems there, and should I abandon hope of using it on
> my Quadra?
Works perfectly on my 660AV.
OK, I'll freely admit that Easy View works in a slightly
non-standard way - it has to to do the things it does. However,
it's just not that hard.
Easy View's documents are "view documents." They are in essence
an index to a set of text files. Those text files must live in
the same folder as the view document, which is why Easy View
comes with a folder for TidBITS that contains a preconfigured
view document.
So, if you want to use Easy View to view TidBITS, download an
issue as a TEXT file (ie - don't save it in Word format or
anything proprietary - Nisus works fine because its native file
format is TEXT), then save that file in the TidBITS folder that
comes with Easy View. If you don't have that folder, download a
new copy of Easy View since every distribution copy comes with
that folder. Once you have put an issue of TidBITS in the
proper folder, launch Easy View by opening the TidBITS view
document. Easy View will launch and will automatically read in
the TEXT file in that folder. Now, the main reasons this
doesn't work for some people is that they save in a word
processor format or their comm program downloads the issue in a
strange way. We're looking for straight, readable text here -
open the issue in TeachText or SimpleText to check it if you're
concerned.
OK, but what if you want to create a new view document? Launch
Easy View, and choose New from the FIle menu. Save the file in
a specific folder (create a new one if necessary), since that's
where you'll have to put the files that the view document will
view. Easy View then opens up a blank window. Choose Modify
View from the File menu, and you'll see a Font/DA Mover style
window. First, choose a format from the popup menu in the lower
right - it's setext for TidBITS, Digest for Info-Mac, Mail for
Unix email, and so on. Then select one or more files from the
left hand list and click on the > or >>> button (the first one
does one file, the second does all the files in the list). When
Easy View is done processing, click Done and save your view
document from the File menu.
There now, that wasn't so bad, was it? The reason Easy View
uses this non-standard method of creating what are in essence
indexes to the text files is because that method allows fast
access to the files but at the same time keeps the size of the
view document very small. In addition, Easy View never modifies
any of the original text files, so you don't have to worry
about that at all.
cheers ... -Adam

Then it functions for the rest of the day. Next day same story again.
Using an other slot won't help.
Any suggestions?

Subject: GeoPort
I just received our GeoPort adaptors, and I cannot seem to be able to get
them to work properly with our telephone system. The most audible aspect of
the problem is that my telephone is dead.
The modem function seems to be working, at least to the extent that AT&F
gets an OK response, but my telephone hand set is completely dead.
Our telephone system, which is huge, is one which allows each line to be
accessed directly by outside callers, but requires a prefix (8 in our case)
to access an outside line. In addition we have a centralised voice-mail
system which intercepts calls after three rings.
I suspect, and have a call in to verify, that our system uses more than two
of the six available wires to do its thing. Does the GeoPort adaptor
recognise more than the two middle wires? While I have a call in to Apple
about this last, I thought I might plumb the wisdom of the List.
I would appreciate any information that has a bearing on this situation.
Thanks.

Well, a few days back I posted a query about problems with my modem
port on my PB165. Although I've had this machine for months, it turns
out that it has an internal modem in it! This, through the Powerbook
control panel settings, has caused problems with the external modem
I have been using.
I figure, as I bought this 165 new and out-of-the-book, that it came
with a modem. But, the retailer didn't know it (evidently -- I got a
sweet deal). How do I find out what kind of modem it is? I've had
little luck using my terminal programs (which I use for the ex. modem)
with the internal modem. Hmm. Any thoughts? Christopher

You don't need to send PS commands. Just use Aplles LaserWriter
utility which should be included on the disks that came with the
printer. There's an option (radio-button, I think) to enable or
disable startup-page.

Sounds like the software with your printer is older than the LW8
printer driver. The Apple LaserWriter utility also was complaining
that way. This was due to the fact that earlier versions of the
printer driver were different: they had a separate "LaserPrep" file.
Maybe you should get hold of the latest version of the LaserWriter
Utility and the Namer.

Subject: MountImage1.2b2.warning
There is a piece of unauthorized and dangerous code
which frequently gets transferred from other archives
to info-mac like a staph infection from a carrier to a
salad bar.
I last issued this warning to the info-mac moderators on
the 14th of March, 1994. It appears that someone has, again,
obtained a copy of the control panel MountImage1.2b2 and
uploaded it "for our enjoyment".
=============================================================
MountImage 1.2b2 is a control panel which allows the
desktop mounting of DiskTop diskette image files.
!!!WARNING !!!
==============
MountImage 1.2b2 has been shown to corrupt files when
they are read from a mounted image file. This
behaviour does not occur with every diskette image
however and since no warnings or error messages appear the
user may unknowingly corrupt valuable files when moving
them from the image files to other storage. The bug is
particularly dangerous during software installations
>From disk image files.
The author of the control panel is:
Steve Christensen
America Online stevec44
CompuServe 76174,1712
Internet stevec@applelink.apple.com
Steve has requested, several times, that MountImage
1.2b2, be removed from all public servers due to his
concern about this bug and other weaknesses in the
code.
Steve did not, in fact, release MountImage 1.2b2 to the
world, it was "leaked" by his beta testers.
MountImage 1.2b2 is DANGEROUS and should be removed
>From this and any other archives...It's a bad penny
that just keeps coming back! This action was taken, at
least twice, by the Info-Mac moderators.
Another posted application, Mt.Image by Yosuke "Basuke"
Suzuki, uses the MountImage 1.2b2 control panel (and
therefore its driver) to mount .image files. It
therefore shares the same problems discussed above
since it depends on MountImage 1.2b2 for its
operation.
I have "been burnt" by MountImage. I have also
confirmed the above statements by email with Steve
Christensen. Steve works for Apple and is the
author of the popular and reliable SuperClock as well
as Apple's own DiskCopy (which creates the .image
files). Steve is blameless in this matter...He has
tried hard to remove the MountImage 1.2b2 from public
distribution.

A few issues ago I sent in a question about printing on a UNIX-machine. I

think the Info-Mac archives should contain both the questions and the answers I
will summarise what I have received from others.
Bill Rausch wrote to me:

I think it's a fairly good solution if you have to use telnet often or, in his
case have, have the ability of virtual memory. However, my LC-zero does not
have
this feature.
Another solution came from Sylvia Elliott:
> there are 2 versions of lpd for the Mac, both shareware/freeware.
> One is called lpr, the other is lpdaemon. The last one sets up your
> Mac as an LPdaemon so that unix people can send PS to your laserwriters.

> I forget where to find these pgms, do an archie or gopher search.
With too much effort I found it at info-mac/util/lp-daemon-332.hqx. It contains
both programs Sylvia wrote about. The program lpr does exactly what I need. It
consumes 100k of RAM, needs to be configured only once and supports Drag&Drop
so
it has found its own place on my desktop.

Subject: Problem with PPP on PB
After suffering for years with a CLI interface to the Internet (first using
VMS on an IBM mainframe and more recently through a UNIX shell on a Sun
Workstation), a free weekend with my wife out of town present the
opportunity to attempt a direct hookup via a dialup to a PPP server. I
purchase Adam Engst's Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh (Thanks Adam!
Great book and a fantastic bargain.) and within an hour had my desktop Mac
on the Net.
Then I tried to set up my PB 165 (8/80 running System 7.1 with Update 3.0
and MacTCP 2.0.4) and found that MacPPP 2.0.1 could not find my internal
modem (ZOOM PBK 144). MacPPP indicates that it is checking for the modem
and then times out before the modem responses. The modem works fine with
ZTerm 0.9, ClarisWorks 2.1 and FaxSTF 3.0.1(beta). The documentation that
came with MacPPP indicates that "the Port Name pop-up menu allows you to
select the modem port, printer port, or any other serial ports registered
with the Communications Toolbox." My pop-up only indicates a "Modem Port"
and a "Printer Port" so apparently my internal modem is not "registered"
with the CTB. Since it works with both non-CTB aware programs (ZTerm) and
CTB aware programs (ClarisWorks), I'm not sure what the problem is or how
one "registers" a serial port with the CTB.
While checking out the internal modem with my other communications
programs, I did stumble upon a kludge that will allow MacPPP to find the
modem and establish a link with the server. If I turn "on" the FaxSTF
software, set it to auto-answer, and then open MacPPP, FaxSTF releases the
internal modem port to MacPPP and MacPPP logs onto the server. Neat feature
of FaxSTF but something I rather avoid since using FaxSTF to keep the
internal modem port active probably extracts a power penalty that I would
rather not pay.
I would appreciate guidance on how to "register" my internal modem with the
CTB or other sage advice that would allow MacPPP to find my internal modem.
My PB has many fewer control panels and extensions than my desktop Mac with
CPU the only software on the PB that is not also on the desktop machine.
Thanks to all who take the time to respond and I will post a summary if a
solution is found.

>anything for it. Can it be done?
The problem is not with ResEdit (directly) or with the amount of memory
it has available. The problem is the template used to display the data.
>From the ResEdit Reference...
Note: Templates can contain a maximum of 2048 fields. For the purpose of
enumerating, a field is defined as any item that is drawn on the screen.
That is, a label counts as a field, as does a separator, and so on. This
limiting number of 2048 is reached rather easily, particularly in
resources with repeating lists, as for example, 'pltt'.
In the case of the 'CTY#' template, it looks like there are 13 fields
per city so once you hit the 158th city you've exceeded the template
limit.
To change Singapore you can write down the latitude and longitude then
remove the city. Now recreate it using the new time zone value. If you
really want to use ResEdit, use the hex editor to open the 'CTY#'
resource, do an ascii find (command-g) on "Singapore" then change the
hex 6978 that you find directly above the 'in' in Singapore to a 7080.
This worked for me.

Subject: SoundEdit 16 and AV Macs
Dear Eugene,
I too have flamed SoundEdit Pro in the past. Partly because
MacroMedia who bought it from Farallon, didn't mention in the upgrade
literature that the program required a 68020 processor or greater and
also required the Apple Sound Chip. I at the time had a SE and was quite
miffed at the fact I just paid $75.00 only to find out that I couldn't
use it. However, I did eventually get a computer that can use it and I
did. SoundEdit Pro version 1.0.5 works great on my 840 AV. However, it
still has a few drawbacks, that being that I have to downsample the 16
bit sound to 8 bit just to edit it. That's where SoundEdit 16 comes into
play. SoundEdit 16 was designed to be used on AV Mac's and I would also
hope that it would be a Fat Binary to work great on the Power Mac's as
well. This program according to a rep. of MacroMedia that I talked to on
March 14, 1994, is supposed to allow me to work with and edit 16 bit
stereo sounds without any downsampling required. I however won't be
paying for the upgrade right away after being burned once. So, my
suggestion, wait for Mac User/MacWorld/MacWeek to preview it before
buying/upgrading.

This program wasn't part of the disks with the original Laserwriter;
instead, I received the "Namer" program. When I went back and

The Personal LW NT disks still contain a version of Namer that isn't
compatible with System 7. You can apple.com, but in
reality, all you need is a more recent version of LaserWriter Utility
(seems to me there's one on the LaserWriter 8 disk) also available from
ftp.apple.com and the Apple gopher site.
The recent LaswerWriter Utility will BOTH rename the printer and also
suppress the startup page.

That Ongoing Headless Chicken Scenario Just Ran Past Me Again:
Just had a letter from Apple (BTW Apple, 'Francis' is the _masculine_ form
of the name!) telling me that Apple Direct, the UK direct mail operation is
no more. This is after barely six months of operation, and one full
catalogue.
Actually, the prices weren't ruthlessly competitive, for obvious reasons,
but at least you could see everything Apple had on the market, including
odds and ends like MacTCP. This made it attractive as a reference item,
while MacUser et. al. allowed you to find the best current deals.
I do hope any new converts Apple made with this operation haven't been too
disappointed by Apple's lack of stamina.
Cheers,
Francis K.

I am looking for steam and other railroad sounds. If anyone knows
of sites (other than AOL--I've already looked there) where there
are digitized railroad sounds, please let me know.

What's the scoop on surge protectors these days? Do the more
expensive ones really provide better protection, or would I

Subject: Why is DayStar PPC card so expensive? (R)
It seems to me that DayStar's PPC upgrade card is priced unreasonably to
about the same extent that their '040 and '030 cards are.
they want about $800 (including adaptor) to put a 50MHz '030 in an LCIII.
for that price, you can get a whole quadra 605 CPU, drive, RAM & all.
Other comparisons are similar, and keep in mind, an accelerated Mac is
NEVER as fast as it's nearest equivalent regular Mac. Partly this is b/c
of the slower data bus in some cases, but caches make up for much of that.
One of the biggest problems is that Apple's built in video cards usually
can't handle more speed than the CPU they were designed for has.
I tried out a DiiMoCache 50MHz (64k cache) accellerator on my LCIII. 8
bit and 16 bit video were nerely unchanged. 1 bit (B&W) was drastically
improved (75% faster in the worst case). But who want's to keep an LCIII
in Black & White?
Anyway, as far as accelerator prices go, Daystar just can't compete with
Apple in terms of Bulk. I'm just guessing, but I'll bet Daystar hasn't built
more than a couple hundred PPC cards. Apple is aiming for PPC sales in the
Millions. Apple simply doesn't pay nearly as much for components as Daystar.
Daystar justifies their price by giving you 80MHz instead of 60, and letting
you put more RAM on the card itself, so it can be accessed straight accross
their 64 bit bus, instead of the orignial machine's 32 bit bus. Is this worth
$1000? Does it cost them $1000 to build? No, probably not. They do it not
because they are "smarter" than apple, but b/c they need an edge. If
Apple had chosen to put RAM expansion and a 64 bit bus on their own PPC
upgrade card, Daystar would have that and some other extra feature so that
consumers would at least be gettign *something* for their extra money.
Accelerators are for people who have money to burn, and are either impatient
or an a very strict and short time schedule. They are really left over from
the old Apple market when everything was way overpriced. You may notice that
you don't hear much discussion of acceleration in the PC world, short of
built in processor upgradeability. I imagine it's because an accelerator
realy does cost almost as much as a whole computer (thanks to economies of
scale), and the PC market, having been deflated ages ago, has no room for
them.

Your favorite Internet sites
I'm collecting ideas for people's favorite Internet resources for an article
I'm doing. What I'm looking for are resources that are most meaningful to Mac
managers and Mac network administrators. I'm looking for:
* Best listserv groups
* Best usenet groups
* Best telnet sites (give passwords if applicable)
* Best ftp sites (besides standards of sumex and umich; give path)
* Best gopher sites (again give hostname and path, and if it supports
gopher + protocol)
* Best www sites (give hostname and html file name)
Please send me your votes, and I'll summarize. TIA!
Cheers!
